NYE in Savannah

phew...all you fellow bloggers...how do you keep up!  I am insanely behind with posts and seem to begin every new post with the same lines - oh well! Better late than never right?

It's safe to say that after all our holiday eating, we continued to stuff our faces on our mini-vaycay to Savannah. The food here is insane...so many delicious places to eat!  Get ready for some amazing food pics...nom nom nom!

We left on Monday the 30th early in the morning from my brothers house (leaving our sweet niece and nephews is always heartbreaking.)  We chose Savannah for various reasons:
1. I had never been there.
2. They seemed to have an awesome set up for New Years.
3. It was on the way back from NC and only 2.5 hours from our house.

We stayed in a newly renovated "hipster" motel, the Thunderbird Inn (yes...it was advertised as such.)It was just perfect! We drove straight in and headed to the famous
Paula Deen restaurant, Lady & Sons.

Clay & Paula

Homemade biscuit & corn pancake...YUM!
Clay's healthy lunch: tomato soup, salad, & pimento cheese 1/2 sandwich

My crab cake with beans, rice, and fried spinach...DELISH!

stuffed.

Clay was not as amused as I was with documenting our trip so I was being obnoxious.

After lunch, we checked into the hotel and headed out to explore the town!
River Street:

This photo is for our good friend, Michael Grizzard. This truck stretched an entire block!
After walking around for a few hours, we stopped to collect our thoughts about dinner. We had checked the website for The Olde Pink House (a super famous place) and it was booked solid for the night. BUT while we were hanging out, Clay kept refreshing the site on his phone and ONE reservation for 2 popped up....SOMEONE HAD CANCELLED! Woo hoo! :)

The atmosphere here was amazing. Downstairs in the tavern, a swanky piano
player jazzed out to a room lit entirely by candles! It was beautiful.

Fried mac & cheese jalapeno poppers...they were
so good I almost forgot to snap a photo!

Clay got pork tenderloin & collards...my first time EVER eating real collards.
I got salmon over garlic mashed potatoes with a creamy dill sauce. NOM.
For dessert...yeah we were too full!

On to NYE!
We decided to get tickets through Groupon for the Savannah trolley.  SUCH a great deal! You pay 1 time and they pick you up/drop you off all over town AND give you all the history at the same time. We got an early start so we could see everything!
Our hipster spot in the daytime.
LOVE the colors!

First stop off the trolley: BREAKFAST!

We walked down the block a bit to the Colonial Cemetery.

Then around town...gorgeous houses!

One of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever seen!

They still had their unbelievable nativity scene set up from Christmas.

Then we did a little antiquing...

and worked up an appetite...LUNCH!
On River Street
We started with fried green tomatoes

My shrimp & grits were to die for! SUPER creamy!
Clay's muffaletta & red beans and rice. Full of flavor!
After being stuffed yet again, we headed back to the hotel for a nap
& to get ready for NYE celebrations!

One of the best parts about Savannah was that it NEVER seemed overcrowded. There were plenty of people there but it wasn't overwhelming.  It was so nice not to be crammed in some place you paid $30 or more for cover for the night just because it was New Years.

As we waited for a table at Vincent Van GoGo's, we hit up the candy shop
next door & got a free sample of their fresh taffy!

Now for dinner....yummy pizza!

There were 2 huge block parties going on downtown - one right outside
our restaurant & one down on River Street. Wet Willies is one of their famous slushy bars (on both streets) who sponsored the NYE bash on River Street with bands and a huge Solo Cup that they raised (instead of dropping) when the clock stroke midnight.

Cheers!
Clay's silly selfie photo shoot:

We stopped by a bar who had an AWESOME band playing, the Hypnotics.
They sounded exactly like the Beatles!

Then we headed to River Street to see the cup raise up!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2014 has gotten off to a FAB start! What about yours?
